The Legend of Kiskendo Cave

Once upon a time in Heaven, there lived two brothers whose heads and body were half monkey. Their names were Sugriwa and Subali. Sugriwa was the younger brother and Subali was the older brother. There also lived two brothers whose heads and body were half buffalo. They lived in a cave on Earth, named Mahesa Sura and Lembu Sura. One time, Mahesa Sura came to Heaven because he wanted to propose a marriage to Dewi Tara, a goddess who lived in Heaven. Batara Guru, the Lord of Heaven, disagreed with Mahesa Sura’s intention to marry the goddess Dewi Tara. Therefore, Mahesa Sura came back to Earth angrily and kidnapped Dewi Tara. Batara Guru sensed that Mahesa Sura would take revenge towards every creature in Heaven by destroying Heaven. Fortunately, before the revenge took place, Batara Guru sent the brothers Sugriwa and Subali to defeat Mahesa Sura and save Dewi Tara. The Gods in Heaven gave Aji Pancasona weapon to Subali. The weapon was very powerful to defeat every enemy. Aji Pancasona could strengthen Subali and could be used as a defense when fighting. With the Aji Pancasona weapon, a person was believed to be able to live eternally until the Day of Judgment arrived.

Later on, Sugriwa and Subali went down to Earth, to the cave where Mahesa Sura and Lembu Sura lived. Before entering the cave, Subali said, “If there is red blood coming out of the cave, it means I have won the fight. But if the blood is white, it means I have failed to defeat Mahesa Sura and I might be dead. I need you to close the cave with a huge stone so that they will not come out to see Dewi Tara.” Sugriwa then understood what his brother mandated to him. After some time, Subali entered the cave to fight alone. Meanwhile, Sugriwa took Dewi Tara out and waited at the mouth of the cave.

Afterwards, the fight had begun. Sugriwa was worried about his brother. A terrible encounter took place in the cave. Luckily, Subali was able to defeat Mahesa Sura, Lembu Sura and his entourage. Unfortunately, it turned out that the blood which flowed out from the cave was red that was mixed with white blood. Sugriwa knew nothing about what actually happened. He thought that the white blood was Subali's blood. This meant that all the perpetrators of the battle were killed, including Subali. As what his brother said, Sugriwa then closed the cave tightly with a huge stone and returned to Heaven to bring Dewi Tara back in Heaven and bring the news of the recent fight to Bathara Guru.

Meanwhile, Subali was still trapped in the cave because his brother covered up the mouth of the cave with a huge stone. With his supernatural powers of Aji Pancasona weapon, Subali destroyed the huge rock that covered the mouth of the cave. Later on, he was able to get out of the cave. Subali then returned to Heaven. He was disappointed because his younger brother, Sugriwa, had already returned to Heaven with Dewi Tara. Subali felt that he was being betrayed by his own brother. He also thought that Sugriwa would marry Dewi Tara. Because of that, Subali fought against his younger brother. There was a dispute that was inevitable due to misunderstanding. Unfortunately, Subali beated his brother Sugriwa. Until finally, the fight was stopped by their parents. In the end, Subali was banished from Heaven to earth by Batara Guru. Because Subali was on Earth, he later became the ruler of Kiskendo Cave. That was all of the story of Kiskendo Cave.
